✦ Synopsis


A guanine derivative of cellulose has been synthesized by coupling guanine with a p-diazobenzoate ester of cellulose. The product (GAB cellulose) adsorbed polynucleotides at high ionic strengths (0.2-1.0 M NaCI); they were eluted by lowering the ionic strength. Yeast ribonucleic acids were separated into fractions of different base composition by elution from GAB cellulose with a series of solutions of decreasing ionic strength. The affinity of biosynthetic polynucleotides for the GAB cellulose was in the order, polycytidylic acid > polyadenylic acid > polyuridylic acid. This indicated that specific base pairing between the guanine residues on the GAB cellulose and the polycytidylic acid was probably taking place. There was evidence, however, that the absorbing sites on the GAB cellulose were not homogeneous.
