β¦ Synopsis
Changes in the internal friction of hydrogen-free and hydrogen-charged irons differing in purity were studted at various stages of plastic deformation and aging. After being charged with hydrogen the undeformed specimens of high-purity iron exhibit at 103 K a reversible diminution of both background damping and amplitude-dependent internal friction. Contaminated iron does not show similar effects. For plastically deformed high-purity iron the hydrogen cold-work peak temperature T, is almost independent of agin, m time. whereas for impure iron r, depends on the composition. amount of strain and aging time. The changes in 7" for impure iron are chiefly due to variations of activation enthalpy for the hydrogen cold-work peak. It can be surmised that in impure iron other interstitials (carbon. nitrogen) affect the interaction of hydrogen atoms and dislocations. This is confirmed by the correlation of shifts of the hydrogen-induced cold-work peak with changes in distance between anchor points of dislocations during aging.
