✦ Synopsis

A relatively quick and correspondingly rough procedure is developed to deal with complex nuclear excitations. This procedure exploits the existence in nuclei of collective excitations (phonons) by replacing the many fermion degrees of freedom with fewer boson degrees of freedom. The emerging picture is that of an interacting boson gas. The boson-boson interaction and boson annihilation graphs are explicitly constructed. It is shown that the interacting boson approximation (IBA) gives good results when applied to the structure of IsO. The limitations of the model are briefly discussed.
