โฆ Synopsis
Through help of ultrasonic methods, the increase of crack velocity in glass plates which had been grooved on one side was measured. Thereby the range of 1 m/sec to 1500 m/sec was encompassed. The measurement of the dependence of crack velocity on crack length as well as on stress (the amount of which is changed by ultrasonic waves) shows that crack velocity is plainly a function of crack extension force. Theoretical statements which describe this dependence are critically discussed.
