The elevated catecholamine levels in cirrhotic patienta with ascites have been propaeed to be due to sympathetic overactivity secondary either to reduced intraveocular volume or to an underlying cardiovascular abnormality such as reduced pressor responsiveness. Furthermore, these elevated catecholam
