✦ Synopsis

The influence of surface finish on sealing ability

How well a seal fulfils its purpose relies on several factors concerning not only the seal but also the sealing surfaces, some of which are not easily determined. Experience plays an important role in finding the proper solution. A seal's effectiveness relies on the effective preload that presses it against the sealing surface: this can only occur if the seals elasticity is adequate to compensate for manufacturing tolerances. The greatest demands are made by extreme flaws, such as misalignment, or variances in centricity, as well as conicity, and out of round conditions.
