Dimethylphenol-formaldehyde resin was carbonized with NaOH. It was found that as the amount of NaOH increases, the temperature of the hydrogen gas evolution is significantly lowered and its amount increases enormously. This is explained by the substitution reactions of H with NaO-groups followed by
