Abstract
A series of cis‐ and trans‐stilbenes magnified image, in which R = H, CN, NO~2~ and R′ = H, CH~3~, OCH~3~, have been synthesized and their ultra‐violet absorption spectra have been recorded. The differences between the spectra of the trans‐compounds and the sterically hindered cis‐isomers as well as the influence of the substituents on the spectra are discussed by means of a semiquantitative treatment.
