Abstract
Photochemical air pollution has recently been identified as a European as well as North American phenomenon. This paper examines periods of visibility reduction at Dublin Airport and suggests that summer hazes are associated with longβrange transport of pollutants from continental and British sources. Back trajectory analyses of air masses during a number of episodes appear to imply that transport beneath a stable, inverted layer may occur in certain meteorological circumstances, particularly involving passage over a cool sea surface. Major donor areas are probably in the Paris Basin, Ruhr, Low Countries, the English Midlands and London area.
