✦ Synopsis

A recent MINDO/3 calculation of some substituted tropylium ions (IJ suggests that substituents R = NH2, OH, OCH3, F, Cl, CH3, CN "seem to provide no conjugative stabilization" of the ion2). The influence of substituents on the positively charged tropylium system is believed to be approximately the same as 2) on uncharged benzene . According to these calculations, hydroxytropylium ion has the lowest heat of formation, followed by methoxy-and fluorotropylium

We have found that the specific rate of ␣-sulfonyl carbanion formation in a ␤-substituted sulfone shows a sizable dependence on the H C ␣ C ␤ X torsion angle. Defining k N = (k exch ) X /(k exch ) model (where the model has X = H or an alkyl group) we observed for a collection of ␤-alkoxy sulfones (
