β¦ Synopsis
Calculations are presented to demonstrate the influence of fluid loading on the propagation of acoustic energy in the vicinity of surfaces. Expressions are developed for sound pressures and intensities as functions of viewing angle in the presence of an infinite homogeneous thin plate irradiated by a monopole source. Results are given for the fields in the vicinity of aluminum and steel plates in air and water when the source frequency is below coincidence. The calculations indicate that acoustic radiation patterns near surfaces are highly dependent upon fluid loading and, in particular, when loading is heavy, sound will not propagate along or near a structure.
