Semiperchlorates

of 1,2-dipicolylbenzene 1 and of 1,2-dipyridylbenzene 2, as well as of 2,3-dipyridyl-G,7-dipyridylquinoxyline 3 and of 2,3-dipyridyl-5,8-dimethylquinoline 4 were studied by NMR and IR spectroscopy. If, as in compounds 3 and 4, at least one additional N-atom is present, the gain of free energy due to mesomeric bond resonance is so large that no strong intramolecular hydrogen bond is formed since the proton is attached to the other nitrogen.
