โœฆ Synopsis

A net-section stress failure criterion can be used to evaluate the critical flaw size for a material having a high fracture resistance. A simple analysis shows that the stress arising from displacement-controlled loadings should be taken into account fully if the applied tearing modulus exceeds a critical value.

The failure of stainless steel piping containing circumferential cracks has been predicted on the basis that crack extension occurs when the net-section stress exceeds some critical value. This paper addresses the question as to whether the net-section stress approach can be applied to the failure o
