โฆ Synopsis
The title of this editorial is quoted from the article in this issue on melanoma of the head and neck. This statement gives a more authoritative tone to an interesting discussion of melanoma.
In this study, 21% of the melanomas occurred in the region of the head and neck, although this area comprises only 9% of the total body surface. Of these, 45.5% occurred in a Hutchinson's melanotic freckle and as such demonstrated a very benign course and very favorable prognosis except in cases where deep dermal invasion occurred. Various treatments are discussed for special sites such as the ear, nose, eyelid, scalp, and the parotid and temple region. Elective regional node dissection was considered for all lesions greater than 0.76 mm in thickness; the authors advise taking histological evidence of regression into account if thickness is used as a guide.
The authors briefly address the need to advise the general population of the benefits of skin protection and of keeping their "sunburn units" to a minimum.
