Experimental data obtained from 25 mm thick Comsteel En25 compact tension specimens tempered from the as-quenched state to 650ยฐC showed that the ASTM Standard, E399-74, specimen size and plasticity requirements were not able to detect excessive yielding and thus the onset of true plane-strain conditions. At tempering temperatures higher than 450ยฐC specimens were found to have a net section stress to yield stress ratio of well above two thirds. The true plane-strain fracture toughness at 6OO"C, the grossly yielded region, was estimated using the J-integral approach.
