Abstract

Substructure coupling methods, such as the component mode synthesis (CMS) method, have been studied in structural dynamics analysis since 1960s. The modes of subsystems associated with the lowest frequencies are typically retained in these methods. In this paper, we present a coupling‐matrix based mode selection scheme for the CMS method, referred to as the CMS~χ~ method. This new scheme is derived using a moment‐matching principle defined on the interface between substructures. It is compatible to the one in recently proposed optimal modal reduction (OMR) method due to Givoli et al. The improvements of the CMS~χ~ method to the CMS and OMR methods are demonstrated by numerical examples from structural dynamics in both frequency and time domains. In this work, a hybrid approach for the synthesis of lossy transmission-line impedance-matching sections is presented. The hybrid algorithm is based on a genetic algorithm and controlled random search algorithm. The hybrid algorithm gi¨es better design than the genetic algorithm.

## Abstract Estimating the casual effect of smoking on birth outcomes is difficult since omitted (unobserved) variables are likely to be correlated with a mother's decision to smoke. While some previous work has dealt with this endogeneity problem by using instrumental variables, this paper instead
