โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Nonโ€reversible latentโ€heat release is introduced into a model of the zonally symmetric Hadley circulation. Including latentโ€heat release does not increase the strength of the circulation when the heating is centred off the equator, in contrast with other studies. However, latentโ€heat release does result in a reduction of the meridional extent of the ascent. The assumptions and simplifications made are discussed and compared with those in other simple models of the role of latentโ€heat release in the lowโ€latitude axisymmetric circulation.
