โฆ Synopsis
Data on the frequency and intensity of one infra-red and three Raman bands, supposed to be characteristic of the tertiary butyl group, have been collected and studied. It appears that an infra-red band near 1250 cm-1 and Raman bands near 1250 cm-r and 745 cm-l should be regarded as characteristic of the neopentyl group rather than of the tertiary butyl group, while a Raman band near 925 cm-l OCCL~ with all types of tertiary butyl group. A semi-quantitative method for determination of the tertiary butyl group is proposed. It should be useful mainly for elucidating the structure of pure compounds.
