✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Polyvinylacetophenone can be oxidized by a special two‐step technique to poly(vinylbenzoic acid). The product is soluble in alkali and in many common organic solvents. Analytical studies on the product indicate that extra oxygenated functions and some scission occur along the chain. An explanation is offered for the crosslinking reaction which occurs when strong alkalinity is not maintained during the oxidation. A portion of the carboxyl groups can be converted to acid chloride for preparation of derivatives.
