โœฆ Synopsis

The relative rate technique has been used to measure the rate coefficient for the reaction of the hydroxyl radical (OH) with methyl isobutyrate (MIB, (CH 3 ) 2 CHC(ฯญO)-O-CH 3 ) to be (1.7 ฯฎ 0.4) ฯซ 10 ฯช12 cm 3 molecule ฯช1 s ฯช1 at 297 ฯฎ 3 K and 1 atmosphere total pressure. To more clearly define MIB's atmospheric degradation mechanism, the products of the OH ฯฉ MIB reaction were also determined. The observed products and their yields were: acetone (97 ฯฎ 1%, (CH 3 ) 2 C(ฯญO)) and methyl pyruvate (MP, 3.3 ฯฎ 0.3%, CH 3 C(ฯญO)C(ฯญO)-O-CH 3 ). The products' formation pathways are discussed in light of current understanding of the atmospheric chemistry of oxygenated organic compounds.

The gas-phase reaction of bornyl acetate (bicyclo[2,2,1]-heptan-2-ol-1,7,7-trimethyl-acetate) with hydroxyl radical has been studied. A relative method was used to determine the rate constant for this reaction, with n-octane as reference compound. Methyl nitrite photolysis experiments were carried
