✦ Synopsis

A range of techniques has been developed to assist mobility in the blind or those with limited sight. Some of these systems have been device centred, with relatively little consideration given to the ergonomics design requirement. This paper considers the possible relevance of analysis and display principles developed in other areas to blind mobility. The requirement of describing mobility situation is discussed, along with the importance of establishing travel subgoals. These sub-goals are considered to be hierarchically organised, while providing the basis for mobility judgements. Five display principles of possible relevance to blind mobility are presented.
