This entertaining story will appeal to all girls and boys interested in horses and horsemanship. It gives a true picture of life and work in a famous English riding school as it was experienced by an American girl, Dinah. She is a Horsemaster, as young riders are called who are preparing for the British Horse Society's examination for a Preliminary Instructor's Certificate.
Under the strict discipline of Major Brooke, Dinah soon learns that there is a lot more in horsemanship than looking cute in jodhpurs. Working with girls and boys of different nationalities, she cleans stables, grooms horses, cleans tack. She is catapulted off horses and back on again, until she knows the difference between a rider and a horseman. Gradually she learns also the meaning of responsibility in caring for a creature so dependent as a horse; she experiences the rewarding satisfaction in pleasure earned and deserved; she comes to know the endearing personalities of the individual horses themselves.
Everyone will love this story, and girls and boys who ride--or who dream of riding--will learn a lot from it. They will learn that a horse demands many hours of hard work for every glorious hour of riding, but like Dinah, they will feel that it's worth it.
