Kat sucked in her stomach, letting out shuddering gasps as her handmaiden tightened the corset around her waist, its bones squeezing hard against her ribs.ย "Are you sure that's not too tight?" she asked between breaths.
Helene tugged on the laces, bringing the corset in tighter. "Almost there."
Her back straightened. She tried to twist and lean, but all it brought was pain and resistance. Jade silk skirts flowed from her waist to her feet as emeralds hung from her ears. Her feet throbbed as her heeled shoes pushed her toes to a point, pressing them together as her calves and ankle ached at the new angle. She pictured the huntsmaster in mind, his cowering terror as her blade turned to flames in his hand. How did that happen? A shudder ran down her spine.
