The synthesis, carbonization, and graphitization of a series of' cu%azole derivatives, substituted at the ring c,arbon atoms by one or more methyl, eth) I, OI-butyl groups, are described. The carbons prepared from these compounds become more graphitic, as measured by X-ray crystallographic data, with increasing alkyl substitution and with increasing chain size of the alkyd groups.
