β¦ Synopsis
The glass transition temperature !I', of glassy systems (Pd,_,M,),,sssSi,.,,, for M = Cu, Ag, Au, Rh, Ni, Co and Fe and (Pd,_flN,),.,,PO.,O for N = Ni, Co and Fe has been investigated. The composition dependence of T, of' glassy alloys exhibits a striking similarity to that of the heat of mixing, AH", of corresponding alloy solutions. The lowering of T, on admixture of metals with different atomic radii manifests itself in the non-linearity in T, vs z curves (for small e) for (Pdl_,M,),.R35Si,.,,, alloys and in t,he shift in peak positions of T, vs z curves of (Pd~_~z)o.soP,.zo alloys relative to those of -AH31 vs 2 curves of corresponding alIoys, Pd,_az.
The present. results confirm and extend the previous propositions that the excess entropy of disorder associated with random mixing of hard spheres of different radii lowers the glass transition temperature, whereas the strong interactions between unlike atoms (or like atoms), regardless of whether they are metals or metalloids, raises (or lowers) T, of the glassy alloys.
