✦ Synopsis

Charles Bingley is in possession of five thousand a year, and a recent inheritance, but where did he acquire this fortune? Is he the respectable man that he appears to be? Or does his past hide something else? And what of his closest friend Fitzwilliam Darcy of Pemberley, does he too, hide secrets that best remain buried? There are those who will do anything in the name of revenge, and those who will reciprocate with honor.
London 1813….
Already regretting his decision, Fitzwilliam Darcy grumbled as he glimpsed the first views of the London dockside. The foul smells of rotting fish and sour ale assaulted his nostrils, and those were the ones he could identify. Everything about going to sea repulsed him. From the miniscule quarters to the overly salted food, it was an experience that he did not cherish. However, he had given his word and since the vessel in question carried the same name as his family estate, he would see to the preservation of its reputation. Rumors traveled faster than anything when carried on the lips of the London ton, and the suspicion of piracy was no small charge. It was best that he sort out this nonsense before the authorities became involved. The strict adherence to law was something Darcy admired, feeling that it maintained civilized society, but he had to admit to feeling that Captain Wentworth was a bit overzealous.
β€œThere have been suggestions Darcy… from persons I trust, that your man is less than honorable,” Frederick Wentworth had confided with a stern voice of warning.
β€œBut privateering is perfectly legal. King George himself sanctioned it many times, especially against the French,” he had countered, but felt a twinge of unease begin to form in his stomach. It was only the long-standing friendship between the Wentworth and Darcy families that had even prompted the private disclosure.
β€œIndeed, should your man have a writ in his possession. However, taxes must be paid. But as I have said, at present it is only rumor based upon Captain Bingley’s circumstances. While I am sure you pay him handsomely, he and his family live quite beyond that of a private ship’s captain. To be honest, I cannot afford the luxuries he takes.”
β€œI assure you; he is the best of men. Although his grandfather was in trade, it was a profitable venture. We attended university together, going to sea was a personal choice. If not for Charles, I too would have missed out on the investment, and it is only rumor.”
β€œUntil it is not. The temptations of easy wealth can be overwhelming. Prove me wrong Darcy, prove everyone wrong.”
In the end, the two men had shook hands and parted as friends. Darcy would do as needed and thoroughly investigate the allegations, but take a care to Charles’ pride. For if it were to be discovered, the bonds of trust between them would be forever broken.
