✦ Synopsis

The general structural characters of carbon bucky-cages are studied in this paper using the principle of structural chemistry and geometry. It is shown that the carbon bucky-cages are made of 12 pentagon and some hexagon carbon-networks, and that the number of heptagon carbon-networks must be zero. The diameter, length and carbon atom numbers of single wall nanotubes (SWNTs) are dealt with in this paper. We propose that the less the curvature of the carbon-cage and the more symmetric the structure, the more stable and greater the yield rate of the carbon bucky-cages. The pentagon network on the edge of NTs must be annealed out to the hexagon networks to maintain the open edge growth of SWNTs. In addition, we study the MS substructures of C and 60 13 C due to C using the probable theory; the theoretical result is consistent with the experimental MS. 70
