✦ Synopsis

unreliable Loewi's test gets full mention. The acute presentations of diverticular disease of the colon deserve more attention; jejunal diverticulitis, in contrast, receives more space.

This work was written when operations for acute conditions were often done too late and the plea for earlier diagnosis was very necessary. Improved results in the management of the acute abdomen must be credited in great measure to the teaching in this monograph, known so well to students and practitioners of the last forty years. This beneficial influence will continue.
