✦ Synopsis
The explicit expression for the Gaussian approximation about any possible mean-field of a given Hamiltonian is derived using functional integration techniques that generalizes the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. In the limit of weak two-body potentials it is shown that the Gaussian approximation reduces to the well-known random phase approximation for the partition function. (C) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
