β¦ Synopsis
The absorption of the y radiation of the UX complex was investigated in aluminium, copper, tin and lead up to absorption-thicknesses of resp. 27.4, 87.0, 65.2, 104.4 g.cnc'.
From K lei n's and N ish ina's theory of scattering by Com pton effect, and from H u I me's and his fellow workers' of the photoelectric effect and Bet he's and H e i t l e r's of the creation of pairs, the total absorption coefficients of hard y rays (' A < 40 X.U.) are calculated as a function of the wave length for Z = 13, 29, 50 and 82 and represented graphically.
The analysis of the absorption curves in the different metals leads to different results for the number as well as for the relative intensities and the effective wave lengths of the components.
Only in the case of the hardest component the effective wave lengths derived from the absorption coefficients in the four metals had about the same value (AI 7.6 X. U.; Cu 7.2 X. U.; Sn 7.3 X. U.; Pb 7.0 X. U.).
The conclusion has been drawn that the y radiation of the UX complex is continuously distributed over the wave lengths and must at least partly be interpreted as an inner "Bremsstrahlung" due to the loss of energy by the primary ~rays in the atom itself.
π SIMILAR VOLUMES
The absorption of the gamma radiation of 198A, is measured in lead 79;xup to an absorber thickness of 3.5 cm. In addition to the three components already found by Richardson, a fourth component is observed, with an energy of about 2.5 eMV and ~n intensity of about 0.02 quanta per disintegration. The
