Several Confederate POWs were offered a choice, prison or go West to fill ranks on the frontier. Joe Evans and several Rebs from his captured outfit opted for the frontier and became 'Galvanized Yankees'. Their duties should have been endless patrols and drills with very little real Indian fighting. Trouble was someone forgot to tell the Indians.
