Peripheral vascular disease is a growing problem in the developed world because of smoking and an increasingly elderly population. The rise in workload detailed by the Vascular Registry in Southern Sweden' shows that the number of operations per lo6 inhabitants per year increased from fewer than 300 in 1980 to more than 1500 in 1987. Although there are no accurate data for the UK, there is every reason to suppose that a similar increase has occurred. In response to this workload, the Vascular Advisory Committee of The Royal College of Surgeons of England has suggested that there should be two vascular surgeons per 500 000 people2.
