HERMANN BURIAN has been not only a close friend, but an inspiration to me for many years. When I was the Editor-in-Chief of the Archives of Ophthahnology it was always a delight to receive a manuscript from Hermann. I could always count on the subject being interesting, the plan of his investigation being astute, and his conclusions being well documented -and, above all, the wriEing being elegant.
