Algebraic geometry was created by MAx NOETHER. The Italian school, headed by CORRADO SEGRE, CASTELNUOVO, ENRIQUES and SEVERI, erected an admirable structure, but its logical foundation was shaky. The notions were not well-defined, the proofs were insufficient. And yet, as BERNARD SHAW puts it: "There is an Olympian ring in it. It must be true, for it is fine art.
