✦ Synopsis

The interaction between protons at close collisions has BARTOL RESEARCH been investigated on the basis of the Born-Infeld theory of FOUNDATION electrodynamics. The theory predicts, first, that the Commtmieation No. 93. interaction should have a definite upper limit which depends on the value of the characteristic constant b; secondly, that the magnetic field set up by the moving charges can produce in this interaction, in addition to the terms required by the classical theory of electrodynamics, terms which cannot be neglected in the treatment of close encounters. These terms become of special significance in that problem whenever the relative velocity of the two protons exceeds 3% of the value of the velocity of light. The bearing of these conclusions on the experiments on the scattering of protons by protons is discussed.

Two methionine-specific sequence ions are described that are formed upon the dissociation of protonated methionine-containing peptides at high (keV) collision energies. These ions, hiherto unassigned, are denoted a, + 1 -CH,S and z, + 1 -CH,S'. Precursor ion scans reveal that these species originate

Probe-laser-induced ("prompt") reaction of H+ D, was observed in a mixture of HI and D2 using (2 + I ) REMPI detection of the HD product. Rotational distributions for HD(u=O-3) of the prompt reaction are reported here, corresponding to center-ofmass collision energies of I .20-1.65 eV and 1.95-2.40
