โœฆ Synopsis


THE copepods, chiefly Calanus finmarchicus, Pseudocalanus elongatus, and Temora longicornis, and schizopods (shrimp) constitute the chief forms of feed of the small sea herring of the Passamaquoddy Bay region.

Very appreciable quantities of ammonia and amines were found when these forms of fish food were allowed to decompose. These products of decomposition were formed also when the two bacteria, Bacillus Walfischrauschbrand and Bacillus B., associated with the feed were grown in pure culture. Skatole and indole as well were present in the culture media on which these bacteria were grown. Moreover, the presence of ammonia and amines was detected in the contents o,f the digestive tracts of " belly-blown," reedy fish.
