Measurements of the fluoresosnce lifetime of solid benzene (= 83.7 nscat -100Β°C) indic7ate that the limiting low temperature quantum yield of fluorescence is 0.22. This yi& is virtually identiui with that observed irr dUute low-temperature dispersions of benzene in EPA and hexanc. It therefore appears that cnncentr&ion and condensed phase environment have little effect on the rate of intersystem crossing from the lowest extited singIet state to the lower triplet rrknifokl of benzene. The absence of phosphorescence in crystalline benzene thus cannot be associated with reduced triplet yields relative to that in dilute solid solution.
