โœฆ Synopsis

For the irrotational flow of an incompressible non-Newtonian fluid the viscous terms in the equation of motion are not identically zero (unless the fluid moves as a solid body). This suggests that (except for flow past a flat plate with zero angle of incidence) a non-Newtonian boundary-layer solution based upon the assumption that the external flow can be represented by a potential flow will be a poorer approximation to reality than the corresponding solution for a Newtonian fluid.
