Mouse preimplantation embryos consume pyruvate preferentially during the early developmental stages, before glucose becomes the predominant energy substrate in the blastocyst. To investigate the importance of the switch to glucose utilization at the later developmental stages, mouse embryos from F1

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
The normality of the preimplantation development of 2βcell to expanded blastocyst stage mouse parthenotes, derived from oocytes activated in vivo, or in vitro, has been assessed at the fine structural level. Major changes in the organization of the cellular organelles, i.e., nucleoli, mitochondria, ribosomes, RER and junctional complexes, follow the same developmental sequences observed in embryos obtained from normally fertilized oocytes. One difference between parthenotes and controls is the scarcity of crystalloid bodies in parthenotes at the blastocyst stage. Because the embryos examined in this study had been cultured in vitro, in a simple salt and albumin medium in the absence of maternal influences, our observations on parthenotes indicate that developmental, preimplantation changes in the subcellular organization of the embryo do not require the continued presence of βmaternalβ factors or the participation of the paternal genome.

## Abstract The optimal oxygen tension for development of preimplantation mouse embryos to the blastocyst stage in vitro was found to be between 2.5% and 5%. Oneβ and twoβcell embryos had a more sharply defined range of oxygen tension capable of supporting development than 8βcell and morula stages.
The connexin gene family, of which there are at least 12 members in rodents, encodes the protein subunits of intercellular membrane channels (gap junction channels). Because of the diverse structural and biophysical properties exhibited by the different connexins, it has been proposed that each may
Embryonic alkaline phosphatase (EAP) is expressed during the preimplantation period of mouse development; however, its function is unknown. To determine whether the absence of an EAP gene affects development of preimplantation embryos, we studied mice homozygous for the disrupted EAP gene (EAP.ko mi
