✦ Synopsis
Photonic-crystal fibers (PCFs) are shown to offer an advantageous flexible architecture of beam delivery and response-signal collection for nanoparticle-assisted sensor arrays, including nose-on-a-chip devices. Within a broad range of numerical aperture values, the figure of merit for PCF response-signal collection in such systems is shown to scale as (NA/a)^2^ with the numerical aperture of the fiber NA and the size of nanoparticles a. For the available high-NA silica-air PCFs, figures of merit as high as 10^4^ are predicted for specific sensor-array arrangements.
