From thc hydrographical nieasurenients i t lins been shown that thc water in the estuary of tllc Tces a t depths below one fatliom has a tendency to inow up rivcr over cacli tidal cycle of cbb and flow. Large quautities of crude scivagc and of industrial eflluents are discharged into tlic estuary, cspeciiilly in the scctioii from Stockton to Cargo Plcct. The principal industriiil cllluents arc those derircd froin coke ovens, contiiiniiig tar acids, ~iaplithnlctic, cyaiiitle, ctc., und spent picklc liquor froiii thc clcmsing of iron aiid stccl with Iiydrochloric acid.
