✦ Synopsis

Beforc concluding this paper, bricf referencc should be made to the rcsults obtriiticcl in the comprehensive survey of the liiver Tces. This survey was undertaken with the objects of obtniniiig more prccisc information tliuti \v:is previously avail~iblc 011 tlic eflccts of diflcrciit kinds of cfllucnts, both sc\vagc and industrial, on :I river, nucl of assessing the powcr of a rircr to recover from the efl'ccts of polluting dischargcs. The results of tlic hpdrogriiphical work arc tlescribccl in Water Pollution licscarcli Tcclinical Paper No. 2, thc chcniictil and biological survey of tlic cstuiiry is described in Technical Papcr No. 5 by W. B. Alestinder, B. A. Southgatc, ant1 It. Uiissindalc, and it is espectcd tliiit i~ teclinical p p c r giving tho results of the chcnical and biological survcy of tlic no~i-tidal reaches by 12. W. Butcher, J. Loiigwell, and F. T. 1L Pentelow will shortly be issued.

From thc hydrographical nieasurenients i t lins been shown that thc water in the estuary of tllc Tces a t depths below one fatliom has a tendency to inow up rivcr over cacli tidal cycle of cbb and flow. Water in the top litycr, ho\ve\w, lins ti strong iict inovcincnt. down river to the sea. A circihtory systcin is tliiis set up and is supcriniposed on tlic to-iiud-fro inovemcnt of the tides. It hiis beeti concluded, thcrcfore, that polluting matter is iiot readily ciirricd out to the sea uiilcss i t is in tlic surfiicc Iaycr when it reiiclics thc estuary.

Large quautities of crude scivagc and of industrial eflluents are discharged into tlic estuary, cspeciiilly in the scctioii from Stockton to Cargo Plcct. The principal industriiil cllluents arc those derircd froin coke ovens, contiiiniiig tar acids, ~iaplithnlctic, cyaiiitle, ctc., und spent picklc liquor froiii thc clcmsing of iron aiid stccl with Iiydrochloric acid. Osicliition of the sewage and otlicr cfllucnts occurs in the cstuury l i t tlic Thc cspensc of tl1e tlissolvcd oxygen in t lie wi1tcr.
