Sepia-eyed flies carrying the slow electrophoretic variant of either Est-6 or Adh were introduced in low numbers and at infrequent intervals into populations of wildtype flies (+se/+se) that were also homozygous for the fast moving variant of either or Adh (50 populations). After 24 generations, the
1. Single inseminated females of Drosophila melanogaster derived from the same population led to discrete strains for both Sternopleural and abdominal chaeta number in agreement with other work, which indicates that the wild populations have genes polymorphic for these traits. Three sets of experiments have been conducted in order to evaluate the role of natural selection at the c~-Gpdh locus in Drosophila melanogaster. (1) The evolution of the F-allele frequency has been followed for many generations in 13 experimental populations having different genetic backgrounds. (
The level of hidden variation in populations of Drosophila melanogaster at the Gpdh + locus was determined by thermal stability studies of the protein. The results indicate a lack of variation using these methods both in and between the two common electrophoretic variants. It is suggested that ~-GPD
