From the Author

After the publication of The English Heart , which is a novel closely based on my own life, I had no intention of writing a sequel (or a series!). To the many readers who asked me what happens to Kaisa and Peter next, I just smiled in reply and said, 'It's up to your imagination'.

But when, a few years ago, we moved to London and had to get rid of a lot of old papers that we'd gathered over the twenty-five years we lived in a farmhouse in Wiltshire, I discovered an old diary I'd written when I first came from Finland to the UK.

I was reminded how, after only a few months of married life, my Englishman was posted to a new submarine, based in Plymouth. When he went away to sea, I was left alone and lonely without my new husband and the friends I'd made during the first few months of our marriage. (This was the 1980s when long-distance calls were expensive and there was no FaceTime)

Although my unhappiness was evident in the desperate words I'd put down, and the text at times made difficult reading, the diary inspired me to write the next chapter in Kaisa and Peter's life.

In The Faithful Heart , I wanted to show a little of the desperation that I felt as a newly married Navy Wife.

To make the events more dramatic, I decided that Peter would serve in one of the nuclear submarines, or 'bombers', even further away from Kaisa'a beloved Portsmouth. These submarines go on patrol for months at a go, and unlike the ones my husband served in, there is no contact with the crew. This kind of forced separation is difficult for everyone involved, but for a newly married foreign young woman who has never experienced it, the loneliness can be devastating.

So where would you go if you were displaced and desperately unhappy? Into the arms of the first man that offers to hold you?

The Faithful Heart contains some scenes that I experienced myself, but I'll leave it up to you to decide which ones they are. ;-) I hope you enjoy this story of Kaisa, the young Navy Wife, as she struggles to get used to her new life in Britain.
