✦ Synopsis
The survival probability recently obtained from a quantum mechanical theoretical SEP spectrum of HCN is approximated by its classical analogue. It is shown that classical mechanics provides an excellent approximation to the quantum survival probability. Analysis of the phase space shows that the motions of the molecule which follow the initial excitation are governed by tori in a resonance zone characterized by a 3: I resonance between the CN stretching and bending modes. A comparison of the Fourier transform of the correlation function to an experimental low resolution fluorescence spectrum is also made.
