✦ Synopsis

In what follows faith names the individual's acceptance of Christian beliefs concerning God, man, and the relation between them. 1 There are at least three types of inquiry concerning faith. First, there is the individual's inquiry as to whether, as Soren Kierkegaard put it, Christianity is the "truth for him". The individual who embarks on this inquiry asks whether in accepting Christianity he will find spiritual fulfillment. Second, there is the inquiry concerning the epistemological structure of what is sometimes called the logic of acceptance of the tenets of Christianity. This is an attempt to determine the ground and philosophical legitimacy of Christian beliefs. And third, there is inquiry concerning the existential effects of the acceptance of Christian tenets and of the cultivation of the Christian way of life. In this essay I will undertake this third type of inquiry. My aim is to show that the acceptance of Christian beliefs has distinctive existential effects which are necessary and sufficient to mark the presence of faith. It is not feasible, however, to examine the existential effects of Christian belief while totally excluding attention to the logic of belief, and I will turn to the latter occasionally as the inquiry proceeds.
