Abstract

Ammonia is excreted against a molecular gradient in several species of annelids and molluscs. Ammonia excretion is also inhibited by exposure to ouabain in concentrations that do not affect circulation or ventilation. These results indicate that ammonia crosses the excretory epithelium in the ionized form, and that the process is linked to the activity of the Na^+^ + K^+^ ATPases.
