โฆ Synopsis
The evolution of microstructure in styrene acrylate polymermodified cement pastes during the early ages of cement hydration has been followed using the environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). The investigations show that the polymer influences the microstructure in at least two ways: (1) some of the polymer is adsorbed on cement grains directly after mixing and forms a film that slows the reactions, and (2) the remaining part of polymer is dispersed in the pore water and forms a film after the free water is sufficiently removed by hydration and evaporation.
