โœฆ Synopsis

The article is a case study. It describes the initialization and subsequent modifications of the selection process used for the annual Award for Excellence in Teaching at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). The method treats highly unbalanced data and utilizes some exploratory data analysis techniques in interesting ways. It leads to a defensible choice for a winner in a very messy setting. The award designates a faculty member as "teacher of the year" and includes a stipend of substantial value. The recipient is chosen by a committee which reviews objective information summarized from ballots submitted by franchised voters. The issues encountered have some general content and the handling of a number of them may have broader interest.

## Abstract In some respects natural selection is a quite simple theory, arrived at through the logical integration of three propositions (the presence of variation within natural populations, an absolutely limited resources base, and procreation capacities exceeding mere replacement numbers) whose

Many ciliates undergo a peculiar form of meiosis in which four haploid nuclei are produced, three are digested, and the single remaining nucleus undergoes mitosis. It is paradoxical that such a meiotic process occurs, since one could imagine several other less costly ways of producing two nuclei. He

Group selection can overcome individual selection for selfishness and favour altruism if there is variation among the founders of the spatially distinct groups, and groups with many altruists become substantially larger (or exist longer) than groups with few.
