✦ Synopsis

The volatile constituents isolated from roots of Valerianu javanica Blume. grown in Indonesia, were investigated by GC and GC-MS (EI) analysis. The roots yielded 0.36% (v/w) essential oil on a dry weight basis. Main constituents of the oil were a-kessyl acetate (36%), a-cedrene (15%), patchouli alcohol (lo%), kessane (7%), valeranone (3%) and bornyl acetate (3%). Root extracts were analysed for valepotriates and valerenic acid derivatives by HPLC. The valepotriates included valtrate (2.2%). isovaltrate (0.6%) and acevaltrate (0.1 YO). Valerenic acid derivatives were not detected. From a phytochemical point of view, V. juvanica is not comparable with the Valeriuna species used in Western countries. However, some similarity exists with the Japanese V. fauriei Briq.
