✦ Synopsis
The dirner radical cation of dimethyl sclenide has been identified in a y-irradiated single crysti of the parent compound. its main (even%)
ESR spectrum showing hyperf& coupling to twelve equivalent hydrogen% Also, the relative intensity of the naturally abundant "SC satellite spectrum is in agreement with a hypzrfme interaction involving two anisotropicallp equivalent selenium atoms. The principal values and direction cosines of the "Se hyperfme and g tensors have been determined and are shown to be s&isfactorily interpreted in terms of a centrosymmetric structure, the unpaired electron occupying ;II~ antibonding (of> orbital built almost entirely from the p,, orbit& of the two selenium atoms. Analysis of theg tensor components indicates that the CSeC planes are perpendicular to the direction of the Se-Se bond. It is also shown that the isotropic 'H splitting andi: factor obtained previously from solution ESR studies of rhe dimethyl sulphide dimer cation are
